We are deeply saddened by the death of our dear colleague and friend, Dr Bob Mauro.
Bob was a man of strong intellect, great generosity and an easy charm. He was deeply committed to public affairs and he did extraordinary work in the sphere of Irish-American relations. Bob was a frequent visitor to the Kennedy Summer School in New Ross and we were privileged when in 2018 he agreed to become a Director of the Kennedy Summer School and to deepen our ties with Boston College. Bob made many friends in Wexford and throughout the island of Ireland. He was someone who was deeply committed to education, to informed public debate and to widening the circle of opportunity. He made a great contribution to the Kennedy Summer School and played a full role in our most recent programme in September 2022, despite battling a serious illness.
Bob’s passing is an immense loss to the Summer School, where he will be fondly remembered by all of us. We will be reflecting on how we can best honour Bob’s legacy and fantastic contribution to Irish-American relations at our next gathering in New Ross.
We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Bob’s wife, Barbara, their children and the extended Mauro family.
