Independent TD for Waterford Deputy John Halligan was first elected to the Dáil in 2011.
Prior to this, he sat on Waterford City Council from 1999, first as a member of the Workers Party and later as an Independent. He was Mayor of Waterford City in 2009/2010.
A life-long trade unionist and community activist, his politics have always been left-wing and, since his election to the Dáil, he has been at the forefront of national campaigns against the Household Charge and Property Tax and continues to tackle difficult social issues.
