Dr. Laura Barberena (Ph.D., The University of Texas at Austin, USA) is a communications consultant and researcher specializing in political communications and civic engagement. She is the founder and owner of VIVA Politics, LLC located in San Antonio, Texas. The firm manages political campaigns as well as produces political direct mail, radio spots, television commercials, and other campaign collateral materials. Dr. Barberena also develops and produces social media campaigns in English and Spanish, prepares organizational strategic plans, conducts candidate trainings, and designs and implements qualitative and quantitative research projects.
In 2020, Dr. Barberena was a member of the Biden for President’s Latino creative team where she helped write, direct, and produce television and radio commercials for the campaign. That same year, she lent her talents to candidate Jon Ossoff, directing Spanish television and social media ads for his successful run for Georgia’s U.S. Senate seat. In 2016, Dr. Barberena was a strategic partner for Hillary for America. In that capacity, she produced English and Spanish television and radio spots for national broadcast and served as the primary focus group moderator for the Latino electorate research for the campaign. In 2008, she was a key member of the Obama for America Latino Media team, producing national television and radio commercials. Prior to joining the Obama team, Dr. Barberena was a consultant to Hillary Clinton’s first presidential campaign where she produced the campaign’s national Spanish language newspaper ads and voter contact materials. At the local level, Dr. Barberena served as a consultant to the campaigns of five of the ten sitting San Antonio councilmembers and as the campaign manager for numerous victorious state and county campaigns in Texas.
Dr. Barberena is a published author and researcher. As a consultant to the National Democratic Institute, Dr. Barberena traveled abroad to the Dominican Republic where she conducted training classes in Spanish for over 80 participants interested in running for political office.
