Gerard has practised as a public affairs consultant since 2008, working for a wide range of clients in the public and private sector. He is a contributor to The Irish Times and a regular participant in political debate on-air.
In fifteen years as a political advisor his roles included Special Adviser at the Department of Taoiseach 1999-2007, Government Press Secretary June – August 2007, Special Adviser at the Department of Tourism and Sport 1997-1999 and policy advisor to the leader of the opposition 1995 – 1997. Gerard was a member of the steering committee of the National Campaign for the Arts 2012-2015. He was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Trinity College Dublin Association and Trust in 2019 and to the board of Irish National Opera in 2020.
